Can a filter with a small tear remain in service pending replacement?

The NanoFlashing™ Air Filter label directs that a filter whose media is torn, crushed, wet or visibly damaged not be installed, that the filter and its frame not be cut, folded, trimmed, bent, punctured or altered, and that the system not be run with no filter in the track.

The label draws no line between a small tear and a large one: “Do not install a filter whose media is torn, crushed, wet or visibly damaged.” It also states: “Air that passes around a filter is not treated by it.” and instructs: “Do not run the system with no filter in the track.” NanoFlashing™ is a technology; the name, rating and sale of a product that carries it are set by that product's maker and seller.
