Could contaminants captured during use change the waste classification?

A used filter holds what it took out of the air, and the label sets how it is handled.

The label states: “A used filter holds the dust and microorganisms it has taken out of the air. Wear gloves, and eye protection and a dust mask where dust is heavy.” The label directs that the used filter is put straight into a bag or waste container, that it is not shaken out or blown clean, and that hands are washed after handling.

How a used article is classified as waste, and what handling that requires, is decided by the people handling it under the rules that apply to them. The label states: “Dispose of the used filter and its packaging as ordinary household or commercial waste under Federal, State and local requirements. Do not burn. Do not reuse the filter.”
