What evidence applies to ultrafine traffic particles?
Traffic is one of the sources the company names for ultrafine particles, and what it publishes for them is laboratory testing of the filter.
The Ultrafine Particles page states: “Vehicles, fires and smoke release ultrafine particles smaller than 100 nanometers.” It also states that current filtration standards do not rate ultrafine particles, and that HEPA and MERV ratings measure filter performance at 300 nanometers, about 3x larger than the top of the ultrafine range, so a filter's rating does not show how it performs on ultrafine particles. The filter captures airborne particles mechanically and by electrostatic attraction.
The named records are LMS Technologies, Report LMS#9904, 28 April 2025, a single-pass fractional efficiency test on a 24 × 24 × 2 in. pleated air filter in an ASHRAE 52.2 test duct, in accordance with standard LMS aerosol test procedures, and the LMS Technologies Pine-Needle Smoke Report LMS#10471 of 20 October 2025, measured as single-pass fractional efficiency in an ASHRAE 52.2 test duct. Report LMS#9904 records an arithmetic mean efficiency of 75.4% across 16 to 604 nanometres for that 24 × 24 × 2 in. pleated air filter, measured single-pass in an ASHRAE 52.2 test duct under standard LMS aerosol test procedures; it is a single-pass laboratory result, and it does not establish performance on traffic particles in a street or a building, or over a service life. The Terms of Use state: “A reported result describes only what the identified test found.”
